Union (Concmap) Interview

A little while before Christmas it was hard to find a TFC related message board that didn't have at least one thread about this "concmap" on it. When I eventually got around to downloading the thing to try it out, I saw what all the fuss was about. A series of progressively harder jumps to allow you to master the art of concing, each one making you say "but that's impossible!" the first time you saw it. We caught up with the author of the original map, [CSI]Union, to find out how it came about.

Why did you decide to make concmap?
I made the map in early 2000. I wanted to make a map to practice concing on :). I wanted to make them gradually harder, have it so a beginner would learn the basics at 1 and 2, and experienced players would tackle the later jumps. I made the map on my old P200 with 32mb RAM, so I was very conscious of r_speeds and having smooth fps throughout the map. Everything is very simple, big flat wide open boxes :). The simplicity is probably a strong point of the map.
Why did you make huge-tricky-to-master jumps rather than the sort of things you'll find in everyday TFC?
The map was actually made well before the big patch that changed concs. Most of the jumps were easier, and were made to practice basic concing. Concs 1-6 only needed 1 conc. Only the last one needed a double conc. Back then not many people knew what a double conc was :). I guess it builds your concing confidence more than anything. You're less likely to miss a conc when you're well practiced.
How did the map find its way to the TFC playing public?
Before I could completely finish the map, I got a new computer and the Worldcraft file was lost. The only .bsp laying around was from a clanmate of mine. My clanmates and I had been testing the jumps as I made them. So I eventually got the .bsp from one of them. Months later some people started asking me about the map, so I sent it out to a few people. This was probably in the summer, maybe August. I still considered the map unfinished... I would have fixed the long gren pack delays, and made the rooms brighter, and I had an idea for at least one more jump. I think I played the map again that summer and got as far as 5 with the new concs. A clanmate of mine ([CSI]Rent_A_Knight) finished the map.

So, months later in December while I was on vacation, news of the map spreads by word of mouth, the map gets copied from person to person, and becomes popular!

How did concmap_r come about?
I guess some guy took it upon himself to shorten the gren bag respawn and created a teleport return on #5, rather than it killing. There was something of a war on a message board as friends of mine, as well as some people who didn't know me were insulted and thought it was disrespectful to go and do something like that without the authors permission. I don't really mind though because I never expected anybody but my clan buddys to play the map!

Also, somebody created a map called concmap2, which is pretty cool. It's flattering more than anything else to have a map you made entertain and even inspire others.

Have you any plans for any similar maps in the future (or have you already made any)?
Yup, me and my clanmate [CSI]KidDeath are making one. It'll be around 10 jumps long. I've got some crazy new ideas... You can do lots with the new concs. With any luck it'll be out in a couple weeks.
