Clan Anomaly Interview

Posted by Wildfire on 10/10/2000.

Clan Anomaly are one of the most respected TFC clans around. After starting off in international/US leagues, they switched to European leagues and have an incredibly impressive record. They're currently competing in the UKTFCL and ETFCL. We caught up with clan leader [~A~]Icepick to chat about their history.

How did Anomaly get started?
I used to play HLDM with a guy called Doc_Morbid before TFC was released, and when we heard about TFC coming out we decided we wanted to make a TFC clan because we loved the idea of it.
Who was your first TFC clan match against?
When we were [RAD] rather than [~A~], it was [IP] Insane Pyros. They were crap, it was for Inferno Tournament, one of the first TFC league thingys about, not counting OGL and IGL. We went on to win the season.
Out of all the matches you've played, which would you say was the most difficult?
When we played SM. for the second time, after our first match which we won they knew what to expect so played 6 defence on 2fort. We only got 1 cap I think.
What did you learn from that match?
That we could completely rely on each other in the offence team to produce what was needed.
Which is your favourite map to play clan matches on and why?
My favourite map is probably Well, always fun playing on that map. Plenty of room for cappers to be creative, lots of different and varied ways to attack/defend. Sadly with latest patch its turned into 'put all defence in flag room area' and use lots of grenades.
Out of all the clans you've played, who do you respect most?
[DW] I think. The whole way they run the clan is pretty similar to ours, most of the time its just people having a laugh. Whereas a while ago we did have a kinda "thing" going with them we didn't really, it was just a few members that some of us really didnt get on with. Also because they been going for almost as long as we have, and are still alive and kicking.
Out of all the clans you've played, who has surprised you the most?
Probably [TA] who went through some really rough patches, and being mates with a lot of the clan all made it kinda depressing, but each time you guys just came back fighting. That Wildfire d00d is just wierd though...
Are there any players from other clans you've seen who you'd love to recruit?
Yeah there's some players I've seen that we wouldn't mind having, but I cant remember any names. Mainly anyone who's reliable/dependable because we had a bad patch when a lot of people werent. Ok, [TA]Wildfire cus he very good soldier but we got him :). Other than that I dunno, we don't actively look for people to recruit. I guess you could say Evo and Rain from [SHS] we wanted because they play well together and are both very skilled. We got both of them too!
How do you think ~A~ is different now to when you started out?
We've lost a few members because of the "updates", some of the people a few of us really loved playing TFC with don't play anymore because of how much the game has changed. And most of us now don't enjoy our games as much because of the way the whole game plays now, and how a lot of clans play to draw because it's an easy target.
What have you learnt as a clan since you started with TFC?
That we need to get members who can be arsed to make an effort to show up/practice and so on, dedicated members are vital to a clan's continued success. Not relying on a few really good players being around every time you need them. Oh and dont recruit psycho pixies, they are crazee.
Out of all the leagues you've played in, which have you enjoyed the most and why?
ETFCL - it was a really well organised league, with it being invite only there were only what I'd call "decent" clans in it, so all the games were good. Except for the odd clan or two that still played what I'd call lamer style for draws.
Moving onto TF 1.5, was the patch what you expected?
Not at all. Foolishly I expected an updated to netcode that would minimise the packets sent for each weapon being fired etc so the game would run faster and smoother. I didn't expect them to alter the game so drastically and yet again completely change the class "balance" that now isn't balanced at all.
What affect has it had on your clan matches?
The new patch has drastically changed clan games I think, and not for the better, now the balance is heavily shifted so that defenders have a MUCH easier time. That, and the not-so-good class balance means a lot of games are now very low scoring. Many matches end up 0-0 because so many clans simply play for draws because they know they can lockdown almost any map very easily, even against the best opposition.
Is there anything about it that you like?
I like the way concs work now, although they are a lot weaker and harder to use effectively you have a lot more control over them, all the old jumps are possible and a lot of new ones that you couldnt do before because concs were too powerful.
You left the UKTFCL and have rejoined for season 5, what are you looking forward to this season?
Now its under new ownership I think we can look forward to a premier division that was chosen by someone who knows what he's doing, and without the previous runners' attitude and habit of making ridiculous rules it should be good. This has already been shown by the premiership only having 11 places, so all the clans will be of high quality, instead of 17...
What are your feelings about the quality of opposition this season?
Hmm, well I know we're in for some great games from [TA], [DW] and [UE]. I haven't really given a thought to the oposition because to be honest my attitude going into a game will be almost the same regardless of who it is.
Do you see your clan progressing into other games, such as Q3A, CS or TF2?
Maybe, but its unlikely, some of our members do play other games, but because not everyone else does they have joined other clans in those games.
